Wi-Fi 7: what to check before replacing access points

Apparatus compatibility, coverage and connection: the name of a new standard does not replace space study.

In a hotel or office, a Wi-Fi project starts with a practical question: where do users have problems, and what are they trying to do? A newer access point may offer additional features, but the Wi-Fi version on its specification sheet does not determine the result in every room.

The 6 GHz requires full compatibility

Wi-Fi 6E and some Wi-Fi 7 devices support the 6 GHz band. Both the access point and the user’s device must support it, with appropriate security settings and in a region where its use is permitted. Ubiquiti highlights WPA3 and PMF requirements and the need to consider older devices. Read the prerequisites 6 GHz.

The Wi-Fi generation and the frequency bands supported by a product are different things. For example, Ubiquiti describes the U7 Mesh as a Wi-Fi 7 access point using 2.4 and 5 GHz. The exact model reference matters as much as the general product label. See the U7 Mesh presentation.

Observe usages before dimensioning

Test in the places where people work or stay: bedrooms, meeting rooms, reception and shared spaces. Record the device, time, application and symptoms. A visible network that cannot be used, an unstable video call and an area without coverage require different checks.

  • Identify the spaces and periods actually involved.
  • Examine network connection and terminal power supply.
  • Identify older devices that must remain usable.
  • Define project acceptance tests at the site of use.

Also provide for exploitation

After a change, reception or the IT team should know which network details to give users and how to report a problem. Hotel room information should match the current setup. A well-planned installation includes these details, an equipment inventory and the relevant administration access information.

Alltech plans equipment placement and connections with the network specialists in the shared team. The decision to retain, adjust or replace equipment follows an examination of the existing installation. It is not based on a universal speed promise.
