Prevention · Equipment · Skills

Safety starts with preparation.

Scaffolding, access platforms, personal protective equipment and training: planning access and working methods is part of the job, before installing a cable or replacing equipment.

01 · Working at height

The right access for the task.

A facade, roof, high ceiling or stairwell require different means. The height is not enough to choose from: you must also consider the gestures, the material to bring, the duration and the environment.

Assess risks and prioritise collective protection

The preparation seeks first to avoid exposure to fall and then favours collective protection. Depending on the location and task, a platform, scaffold or carrycot can offer an adapted workstation.

Prepare scaffolding

Appropriateness, support, access, protection and verification should be examined. The material package and the conditions of the site guide the organization. A scaffolding already present on site cannot be used without ensuring that it is suitable for the work planned.

Agree responsibilities

Assembling, modifying, disassembling, checking and using are distinct roles and competencies. Stakeholders and useful documents are identified prior to start-up; an anomaly or modification of the site requires a review of working conditions.

02 · Protecting people

PPE matched to the actual risks.

Personal protective equipment complements preventive measures and collective protection. Helmet, eye protection, gloves, shoes, hearing or respiratory protection: the choice depends on the risks identified and the task, with equipment compatible with each other.

When personal fall protection is needed, having a harness in the vehicle is only a starting point. The system must be suitable, anchor arrangements must be defined, users must be trained and rescue arrangements must be planned.

The state, maintenance, storage and controls of protections are part of their monitoring. Damaged or unsuitable equipment is discarded and reported.

03 · Learning and practising safe working methods

Putting training into practice.

At Alltech, learning combines training courses, practical exercises and support from colleagues. It covers working at height, handling and posture, and operating access platforms, according to the tasks assigned.

Working at height and operating access platforms

Alltech has organised training in working at height, posture and operating R486 category B access platforms. These courses address different situations and each has its own scope.

Scaffolding: different tasks require different skills

Using scaffolding is a different task from assembling or inspecting it. Training requirements depend on the assigned role and the equipment used. Responsibilities are clarified for each job.

Electrical risks and authorisations

Training develops knowledge and practical skills. Electrical authorisation is issued by the employer for the relevant operations. Likewise, a CACES certificate does not replace the required employer authorisation to operate equipment.

04 · Planning the work

Share the right information before work begins.

In an occupied hotel, condominium or workplace, prevention also concerns those who remain on site. Access, traffic and coordination with other companies are being prepared with the site manager.

  1. Describe the site

Area to be reached, height, access, obstacles, public circulation, timetables and constraints of exploitation.

  2. Plan the equipment

Workstation, access equipment, marking, supply, handling and protection required.

  3. Confirm responsibilities and arrangements

Interlocutors, roles, skills, documents and prevention coordination adapted to the operation.

  4. Reassess conditions on site

Unfavourable weather, different access or missing protection may lead to adaptation or postponement of work.

To prepare an application, provide a description of the area and, if possible, photos of access. We specify with you the conditions of intervention and the elements to be checked on site.

Your questions

Your questions answered.

Can scaffolding already on site be used?

His presence is not enough. We need to check our response, its status, audits and conditions of use, and then define the responsibilities with the stakeholders involved.

Is a harness enough for working at height?

A harness is one part of a system. Collective protection takes priority. Where personal fall protection is necessary, equipment selection, anchors, training and rescue arrangements must all be planned together.

What information helps us plan the work?

The area concerned, the work envisaged and access constraints make it possible to prepare for the first exchange. A comprehensive photo tour is useful; a visit completes the information to examine the necessary means and organization.
